IN THE SPIRIT OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. WITH CYRIL NEVILLE

For the Martin Luther King holiday we honor his spirit and struggle with African American spirituals, protest anthems, freedom jazz and soul power. New Orleans musician and activist Cyril Neville tells of growing up with Mardi Gras Indian rituals and street music and the importance of both to Black community life in the city. From our archives, the late jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard talks free form music and freedom of expression. Plus, Bob Dylan gives voice to the social unrest of the Sixties. Cellist and singer Leyla McCalla, formerly of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, reprises "The Capitalist Blues" for a new generation. And Big Mama Thornton brings a musical storm tide with her defiantly upbeat take on "Wade in the Water." Be in that number with American Routes for MLK Day weekend!

FOR LABOR DAY WEEKEND: THE BEST OF AMERICAN ROUTES LIVE

This Labor Day weekend, it's the best of American Routes Live--studio concerts and conversation in collaboration with the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park--including the Pine Leaf Boys with Cajun tunes and dances, Haitian-American singer songwriter Leyla McCalla and her band, Creole banjoist and songman Don Vappie, New Orleans's king of the trumpet Kermit Ruffins, jazz saxophone modernist Donald Harrison and an acoustic set by Rickie Lee Jones.

AMERICAN ROUTES LIVE: CREOLE SONGLINES OF LEYLA MCCALLA AND SAXOPHONIST DONALD HARRISON'S JAZZ JOURNEY

We go live in concert and conversation with two New Orleans artists each of whom bring their family heritage forward into contemporary music. Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Leyla McCalla has called New Orleans home for many years, but her family ties are to Haiti. She draws on French Creole roots for inspiration, as well as from the poetry of Langston Hughes. Then jazz saxophonist Big Chief Donald Harrison, whose musical journey includes time in New York with drummer Art Blakey's band, talks about "Afro-New Orleans culture" and demonstrates how to bring soul, funk, and Black carnival traditions into modern jazz.

SOUNDS OF FREEDOM: FONTELLA BASS AND FREDDIE HUBBARD

In celebration of Black Music Month and Juneteenth, we honor the struggle for equality with the sounds of freedom. Sixties soul queen Fontella Bass used her gospel background and voice to make freedom statements of her own, such as her biggest hit "Rescue Me." Then, late jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard talks free form music and freedom of expression. Plus music from John Coltrane, Leyla McCalla, the Staple Singers and more.

DREAMERS THEN & NOW, VOL. 2: JESSE COLIN YOUNG AND LEYLA MCCALLA

We peer into the minds of musical dreamers of the past and present, exploring dreams of love, immigration, and a more perfect union. Singer songmaker Jesse Colin Young of the Youngbloods speaks of the 60's folk revival in Greenwich Village and his dreams realized in the anthemic 1967 song "Get Together." Then, Haitian American cellist and singer Leyla McCalla describes her journey from New York to New Orleans, connecting the cultural histories she'd long dreamed of along the way. Plus dreamscapes from Rhiannon Giddens, Los Cenzontles, Mahalia Jackson and John Prine.
