IT'S "CARNIVAL TIME" IN THE CARIBBEAN, NEW ORLEANS, AND FRENCH LOUISIANA-WITH PROFESSOR LONGHAIR AND A CAST OF THOUSANDS
It's Carnival time in the Latin-influenced world. We'll hear music and celebrations in the Afro Caribbean and Gulf Coast including French Louisiana's courir de Mardi Gras, and a visit to Mardi Gras day in the neighborhood with the Mohawk Hunters, Black masking Indians from Algiers, on New Orleans' West Bank. Then a special tribute to New Orleans' Professor Longhair with fellow pianomen Allen Toussaint, Dr. John and Ellis Marsalis.
LIVE WITH PIANO PRINCE DAVELL CRAWFORD AND NATIVE AMERICAN SONGS AND SOUNDS FROM POW-WOW TO POP
It's an American Routes live session with the Piano Prince of New Orleans, Davell Crawford, a fine singer and wily raconteur who grew up in Lafayette and New Orleans. We'll also hear some of his and our piano heroes from South Louisiana and beyond: James Booker, Professor Longhair, and Ray Charles, as well as Davell's grandfather, Sugar Boy Crawford. Then, it's our tribute to Indigenous Peoples Day, the second Monday of October, with an array of Native American voices and music from the Black Lodge Singers, Dennis Banks, Link Wray, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Redbone. Plus archival and current conversations with Assiniboine Cree Singers from Montana, French-speaking Houmas from Louisiana and vocal harmonies from the women of Ulali.
IT'S "CARNIVAL TIME" IN THE CARIBBEAN, NEW ORLEANS, AND FRENCH LOUISIANA WITH PROFESSOR LONGHAIR AND A CAST OF THOUSANDS
It's "Carnival Time" throughout the Latin-influenced world. We'll hear music and celebrations from the Caribbean and Gulf Coast, including Cajun and Creole courir de Mardi Gras songs and a visit on Carnival day with the singing and drumming Mohawk Hunters, Black masking Indians from Algiers, on New Orleans' West Bank. Then a special tribute to Professor Longhair with late fellow New Orleans pianomen Allen Toussaint, Dr. John and Ellis Marsalis.
COUNTRY, CUBAN AND CAJUN: RAUL MALO & THE MAVERICKS; THE PINE LEAF BOYS
We meet Raul Malo, the Miami-born and Cuban-descended singer and leader of The Mavericks, known for country, pop and roots rock. We'll talk about that and Latin music, all behind the band's huge success in country music and their recent successful all Spanish language recording. Then a live concert and conversation with the Pine Leaf Boys as Louisiana French two-steps meet rock n roll. Plus music from Celia Cruz, Patsy Cline, Los Lobos and Professor Longhair.

PIANO ON A TRUCK AND GUITARS ON STAGE
We take a deep dive into the history of pianos and guitars, from studio to stage in jazz, blues, roots rock and soul. First, we cruise New Orleans to hear pianos played live to order in front of your house on a truck, and hear favorite studio recordings from heroes of the 88s including Ray Charles, Nina Simone, McCoy Tyner, Papo Lucca and Professor Longhair. Then we go to the stage at the National Folk Festival in Salisbury, Maryland for a round robin guitar session with Jerry Douglas, Bill Kirchen, Eddie Cotton and Steve Lewis. Plus some recorded guitar heroines: Mother Maybelle Carter, Sister Rosetta Tharp, Bonnie Raitt, and Lydia Mendoza.
CLUB HOPPING II
Come along for a jaunt around New Orleans, in this archive edition of American Routes, as we visit great nightclubs and tune in to live local music over two decades. We visit the legendary Tipitina's, an Uptown institution that showcased homegrown talent like Professor Longhair, James Booker, Dr. John, and the Neville Brothers, and is now run by the funk band Galactic. Then, a visit to the long-closed Donna's Bar & Grille in the French Quarter, where clarinetist Evan Christopher and piano player Tom McDermott made waves with their unique blend of New Orleans, Caribbean, and classical music. Plus a recipe for a classic New Orleans cocktail, the Sazerac, and music for late night parties or hangover mornings.

ROCK ROUTES AND CAJUN STARDOM: BOZ SCAGGS AND JIMMY C. NEWMAN
We trace stardom back to its source, traversing the roots and routes that led small town musicians to national fame. Pop icon Boz Scaggs and the late Cajun honky-tonk man Jimmy C. Newman took very different paths to the stage but carried with them the sounds they grew up hearing. Boz Scaggs achieved mainstream success with his own platinum records as well as his work with Steve Miller and Duane Allman. We talk to him about his 6+ years performing on the road and how he came into his own by reconnecting with the blues he heard as a kid in "Nowhere, Texas." Then, we remember the late Jimmy C. Newman, who took the sounds of French Louisiana to the Grand Ole Opry and put Cajun music and culture on the map. Son Gary Newman, producer Joel Savoy and musician Kelli Jone tell of his legacy and their tribute album, Farewell, Alligator Man. Plus, we trace Hank Williams' "Jambalaya" back to its Cajun origins, served up with tunes from Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt and Professor Longhair.

LATIN TINGE: TITO PUENTE AND NATI CANO
For National Hispanic Heritage Month, we're celebrating the "Latin tinge" in American music. We'll hear a classic interview with the late Nuyorican bandleader and King of the Timbales, Tito Puente, who tells us about the roots of tropical Latin jazz in Spanish Harlem. Then, it's off to the West Coast, where we visit the Los Angeles club of the late, great bandleader Nati Cano. As leader of Mariachi Los Camperos, Nati Cano was a central figure in the Mexican Mariachi scene of East LA. All this, plus music from Dizzy Gillespie, Lalo Guerrero, Los Lobos, Buena Vista Social Club, Freddy Fender, Professor Longhair and more.
CREOLE EYES AND CLASSICAL EARS: TOM MCDERMOTT AND VAN DYKE PARKS
Conversation with and music from Van Dyke Parks, an eclectic, popular classicist known as a composer and keyboardist, arranger and producer, with a great love of calypso and Hawaiian cowboy music. The man behind the curtain for so many artists, the Hollywood-based Parks is well-regarded for writing and studio work with Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, Ry Cooder, Lowell George and Randy Newman, among many. He recently became a fan of pianist Tom McDermott, a St. Louis-born, New Orleans-dwelling and Brazilian-influenced vernacular virtuoso. Parks thought enough of McDermott's recorded repertoire to collect and reissue some of it as Bamboula--so named for the composition by the mutually-admired New Orleans 19th century pianist Louis Moreau Gottschalk. Tom McDermott, also a fan of Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, Professor Longhair and James Booker, plays in his parlor for us.
THE EMPEROR AND THE PROFESSOR OF NEW ORLEANS MUSIC: ERNIE K-DOE & PROFESSOR LONGHAIR
We recall two grand figures of New Orleans music beginning with Ernie K-Doe, the surreal soul man of catchy songs, and flamboyant antics in New Orleans R&B. Ben Sandmel who wrote Ernie K-Doe: The R&B Emperor of New Orleans joins the carnivalesque conversation. Then a piano tribute to Professor Longhair by Dr. John, Jon Cleary and George Porter, live from the legendary New Orleans club Tipitina's, named after Longhair's most famous song. We also play the original recordings with commentary from Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, producer Jerry Wexler, and studio recordist Cosimo Matassa.

NEW ORLEANS MUSIC: R&B, ROOTS ROCK AND SOUL, GOSPEL AND FUNK
Jazz may have been born here, but by the 1950s the music of choice in New Orleans was rhythm & blues. Local talent topped the charts with songs like "Lawdy Miss Clawdy", "The Fat Man" and "Working in the Coalmine". We'll talk to many key figures in New Orleans R&B, from hitmakers like Lloyd Price, Dr. John, and Aaron Neville and producers Allen Toussaint and Harold Battiste, to bandleader Dave Bartholomew and musicians like drummer Earl Palmer. Plus music recorded in New Orleans' legendary J&M Studios by Little Richard, Fats Domino and Professor Longhair, and funk, jazz, pop and soul along the way.

RADIO DAYS
We'll talk with Gospel radio host Pearlie Tolliver, Monroe, Louisiana's "Queen of the Dial." And New Orleans DJ Billy Delle, the man who loves scratchy 45s to death on his show, "Records from the Crypt." With music from Hank Williams, Joni Mitchell and Professor Longhair.
MILLENNIAL ROUTES
Now that the Y2K dust has settled we'll take a relaxed look back at our favorite American Routes music from the 20th century--and try to imagine what the 21st century will bring. Of course you'll hear Armstrong, Gershwin, Ellington, Dylan, and Hendrix along with Aretha, Patsy Cline, Jerry Lee Lewis and Tito Puente. How about Dewey Balfa, Clifton Chenier, Professor Longhair, and Flaco Jimenez. By the way January 8 is Elvis' birthday!
