FROM THE SHOW: WORDS AND MUSIC
Rock and roll founder Chuck Berry doesn't fit popular image of a singer-songwriter, but he has provided us with the quintessential images of America in his songs. With his lyrics about down home people seeking love and glory in big cities and small towns across America, and his guitar poised between country and blues, Berry offered a road map for early rock and roll. Here he recalls his first performance, as a kid in St. Louis.

THE CAROLINA CHOCOLATE DROPS AND THE BLACK EXPERIENCE IN COUNTRY MUSIC
This week, we talk to the founding members of the Grammy award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops. Justin Robinson, Rhiannon Giddens and Dom Flemons started playing music together under the tutelage of legendary black old-time fiddler, Joe Thompson in his backyard shed. The Chocolate Drops came together to carry on the old time and country traditions from the Piedmont region in the Carolinas, but they wanted to do more than just play. They wanted to show their audiences that African American music finds its roots in genres beyond blues and jazz. Then we delve into the archives for our classic conversation with the late, great Ray Charles - and pianist Johnnie Johnson tells us about the surprising origins of Chuck Berry's "Maybellene."
WORDS AND MUSIC
From creation to criticism, this archive edition of American Routes explores the relationship between language and sounds, words and music. Rock and roll originator Chuck Berry, alt country traditionalist Gillian Welch, and music writer and novelist Nick Hornby give a variety of perspectives on the subject. With a mix of celebrated songwriters, storytellers, and literary heroes in American music.
OF HIGHWAYS AND HOME: ALISON KRAUSS AND ALYNDA SEGARRA
This week on American Routes, we'll ride along with fiddler and singer Alison Krauss on her journey through bluegrass and country, from small-town Illinois all the way to Nashville. Then it's Hurray for the Riff Raff, a New Orleans folk band fronted by Alynda Segarra, whose roots are in the Bronx. Segarra tells of her own time traveling as a teenager and what has inspired her to reconnect with her Puerto Rican heritage. En route we'll hear tunes from Chuck Berry, Bob Wills, Nina Simone and Tom Waits.

I DIDN'T LEARN THAT IN SCHOOL!
It's time to go back to school! Many of the lessons learned in school are valuable, but more often people carry their memories of great teachers, friends and growing up to think for themselves. Likewise, much of America's greatest music -- blues, jazz, country, Cajun -- was passed on informally from master players, in clubs, at jam sessions or dances. We'll visit two special professors who really believe in teaching the musical vernacular both formally and informally. Ray Charles shows kids how to play the blues at his Los Angeles studio, and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis tutors New Orleans high school students in jazz technique and appreciation. We'll also talk to the all-teen Cajun band from French Louisiana, Feufollet, about why they learned to play traditional music. Plus, tune in to children's songs and back-to-school anthems from Chuck Berry, Louis Armstrong, Willie Nelson and Aretha Franklin.

NAME THAT TUNE
We'll name some names with songs about "Corina" and "Mona Lisa" from artists like Bo Diddley and Fats Waller. Our guest is a 22-year-old blueswoman who's out to make a name for herself, Shemekia Copeland. Chuck Berry's pianist Johnnie Johnson will take us behind the scenes for the making of their first hit "Maybellene." And we'll step up to the bar to meet a Baltimore man who legally changed his name to American Joe. Plus the legend of outlaw Staggerlee.
