WHO WAS HARRY SMITH?: THE GREAT DELINEATOR AND HIS ANTHOLOGY OF AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC
Who was Harry Smith? The short answer about the 20th century polymath and hustler might be divined in his legendary 1952 Anthology of American Folk Music, an LP collection of mostly Southern US folk songs from 78rpm records. "The Anthology" established a cult of listening and influenced popular and folk revival artists from John Sebastian and the New Lost City Ramblers to rockers like Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead and Beck. We'll talk with Smith biographer John Szwed about Harry's life as an artist, record collector and 1950's bohemian. Then, old and new covers of the Anthology and its B-sides from Gillian Welch, Bob Dylan, Gatemouth Brown and Amythyst Kiah.
THE FOLK REVIVAL REVISITED
The American folk music revival that grew from the Post-WWII era to the Sixties was about more than just music: it wrapped in political activism, romantic visions of the self and the "folk," group "sing-a-longs," "hootenannies" and careers of singer-songwriters. We interview folk heroine Judy Collins about her move from traditional British folk songs to the new songs and sounds in Greenwich Village. Jug bandleader Jim Kweskin talks about his love of communal living. The late Pete Seeger and Alan Lomax offer opinions on their divergent views of folk music and the quest for authenticity. Jerry Garcia tells of his most influential folk music source and we'll hear Dylan go electric at Newport in 1965. Rhiannon Giddens talks about bringing back the peoples' music of another era today.

JULY 4TH WEEKEND 2015 WITH JERRY GARCIA & THE GRATEFUL DEAD
For 50 years in various incarnations the Grateful Dead have held forth as America's iconic roots rock, jamming tour band. This July 4th, as Dead fans gather for a final series of concerts in Chicago, we revisit a classic American Routes program that featured the musical sources of the Dead in blues, old-time country, folk and jazz. We also reprise an in-depth interview that Nick did as part of an oral history with the late guitarist and bandleader Jerry Garcia at the Smithsonian Institution. Garcia often presented himself as an alternative huckster version of Uncle Sam complete with a stars and stripes top hat. His Americanist vision was grounded in the diversity of traditional music that he loved, electrified and improvised upon. In addition to Jerry and a wide range of music, the Dead Heads also have their say about the nature of a Grateful Dead live show. So come hear "Uncle John's Band!" Join us as we go "Truckin'," and May the Fourth Be With You!
JERRY GARCIA
We pay tribute to the late guitarist Jerry Garcia who passed away 9 years ago this month with a historic interview with Garcia from his 1989 visit to the Smithsonian Institution. Roots and branches of the Grateful Dead's sound take center stage in this mid-summer celebration in music and memory.
AMERICAN ROUTES 5TH ANNIVERSARY
It's been 5 years since American Routes first hit the airwaves, and we're celebrating! Hour 1 highlights include well-wishes from listeners, anniversary songs, and great conversations over the years with Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, the late Jerry Garcia, Norah Jones, Dolly Parton and Harry Shearer (of The Simpsons). Devoted fans will be amused by a look at our retro selves, and new listeners can hear how this all started! Hour 2 is our 5th Anniversary concert at the House of Blues, with New Orleans greats Irma Thomas, Frogman Henry, Kermit Ruffins and Henry Butler, and special guests Shemekia Copeland and Keb' Mo'.
