FROM THE SHOW: DIVAS?

Singer-songwriter and pianist Norah Jones talks about wanting to be Bill Evans, moving from jazz to country styles in her singing and why Hank Williams reminds her of her grandmother.

DOWN HOME IN THE BIG CITY: ANDY STATMAN & NORAH JONES

In an archival classic, we spend time with two eclectic NYC-based musicians who mix country with jazz and other traditions. Multi-instrumentalist Andy Statman comes from a family steeped in Jewish musical traditions, but got the bluegrass bug playing with David Grisman and Tony Trischka. We'll talk about his explorations of bluegrass, klezmer, free jazz and duets with tea kettles. Then singer and pianist Norah Jones, known for her own personal stamp on jazz, shares the Texas native's country side of life in her work with The Little Willies. Plus lots of "citified" country songs and downhome urban tunes.

BLUE NOTE RECORDS: THEN AND NOW WITH DON WAS

We take a deep dive into the vaults of Blue Note Records, the independent label that helped put artists like Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey and Jimmy Smith on the map. Flagbearer of trad jazz, bebop and the cool school, Blue Note is still at it after 80 years and has expanded its wheelhouse to include vocalists like Norah Jones, Ryan Adams and Van Morrison. We talk with producer extraordinaire and Blue Note president Don Was about the label's past and new directions. And we confab with record maven Michael Cuscuna about digging through Blue Note's back catalog and giving life to unreleased and out-of-print masterpieces. Plus, we hear from Aaron Neville, Jason Moran and Lonnie Smith about their part in the legendary label's history. It's a parade of jazz, old and new, borrowed and blue... and then some!

I AM (NOT) A DIVA

What comes to mind when you hear the word "Diva"? We've found that it's a word that can go both ways--as praise for an accomplished and magnetic performer, or as a put-down to someone seen as pompous or high-strung. We're singing divas' praises while also exploring the term's various connotations through music and interviews from high-minded women with conflicting views on the word: Bonnie Raitt, the late Abbey Lincoln, Norah Jones, and New Orleans Gospel Diva, Cynthia Girtley. Plus songs from divas and non-divas like Aretha Franklin, Patsy Cline, Lydia Mendoza, and Jessie Mae Hemphill.
